Supported Living That Fits the Person — Not the Other Way Around
At VLS Care, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a meaningful, fulfilling and independent life.
Our supported living homes and Outreach Service provide personalised support for adults aged 18 and over. Whether somebody is moving into their first home, leaving care, developing new skills or simply looking for more opportunities to be part of their community, our support is built around the individual — not a standard timetable or a one-size-fits-all package.
A Life Built Around the Individual
Person-centred support means looking beyond someone's diagnosis or assessed needs. We take time to understand:
- What matters to the person
- Their interests, goals and ambitions
- Their existing strengths and capabilities
- The areas in which they would like additional support
- How they communicate and make decisions
- The pace at which they feel comfortable progressing
Working alongside the person, their family, professionals and wider support network, we create an individual activity and independence plan. This balances personal choice, safety and development while ensuring activities remain accessible, inclusive and socially engaging.
Success looks different for everyone. For one person, it may mean learning to prepare a meal independently. For another, it could be travelling safely, volunteering, managing money, developing friendships or becoming more confident when communicating with others.
Building Skills Through Real Experiences
We believe that independent living skills are best developed through meaningful, everyday experiences. The people we support can take part in a wide range of opportunities designed to increase confidence, independence and community involvement:
Through our links with CalderStones Community CIC, people can also participate in opportunities such as the Can-Do Café — a practical and supportive environment where people can develop skills in budgeting, shopping, food preparation, cooking, hygiene, teamwork and customer service. It is about much more than making a meal. It gives people a purpose, an opportunity to contribute and a genuine sense of achievement.
Supported Living
Living in a VLS Care supported living home means having a home of your own while receiving the right level of support to maintain everyday life. We provide bespoke 24/7 1:1 and 2:1 supported living for adults across Calderdale and Rochdale. Our Mytholmroyd service supports people aged 18–25; our Whitworth service supports adults aged 30 and over.
Support may include help with:
- Managing household responsibilities
- Cooking, cleaning and laundry
- Attending appointments and taking medication safely
- Managing finances and maintaining relationships
- Accessing education, work or volunteering
- Taking part in community and social activities
- Developing confidence and greater independence
People are supported to make choices about their routines, activities and future goals. Staff are there to provide guidance, encouragement and practical assistance without taking over the person's life. Our aim is not simply to provide care — it is to help people develop the skills, confidence and opportunities needed to live the life they choose.
Day Services
Meaningful day opportunities focused on independence, learning, confidence, and individual goals. We help people build friendships, develop new skills, and enjoy life to the full — with activities designed to be fun, engaging, and purposeful.
Activities include:
- Arts, crafts, music and creative activities
- Sports, fitness and outdoor activities
- Social clubs and community outings
- Skill-building and educational activities
- Can-Do Café with CalderStones Community CIC
- Focused on progression and individual goals
Being included means more than simply being present. It means being welcomed, involved, valued and able to participate in a way that feels right for the individual.
Outreach & Independent Living
Not everyone needs — or wants — to live in a supported living home. Our Outreach Service provides flexible, person-centred support to people living in their own homes, with family or in other community settings across Calderdale, Rochdale, and Lancashire North.
Outreach can focus on:
- Learning to cook and manage a home
- Accessing activities and attending appointments
- Improving confidence and reducing isolation
- Maintaining a tenancy
- Travel training and safe community access
- Flexible support that grows with the person
The support can change as the person's circumstances, confidence and abilities develop. It can offer a helping hand during a period of transition or provide consistent longer-term support that enables someone to remain independent.
Why One Size Does Not Fit All
VLS Care has extensive experience supporting young adults leaving care, including people who may have previously been fully dependent on others and are beginning to discover what independence means for them. We also support adults in their thirties, forties, fifties and beyond who may be at a completely different stage of life.
An 18-year-old moving towards independence may want to build friendships, attend college, explore employment, go out in the evenings and experience new things. An older adult may still want an active and socially fulfilling life but could prefer a steadier routine, different activities or a calmer home environment.
That is why we have developed a second supported living home, allowing us to offer more carefully matched and distinctive placements. This approach considers more than age — we look at personality, communication, sensory needs, routines, interests, compatibility, preferred pace of life and future aspirations. The aim is to create a home in which each person can feel comfortable, understood and able to thrive.
